Why participate in post-op group physiotherapy?

These group sessions are led by our Physiotherapists to ensure safe and accurate exercise prescription and technique. These active group physiotherapy sessions are designed to help post-operatively with patients who have undergone total knee and hip replacements to regain range of motion, improve strength, function, and quality of life, and to return to sport where desired. The classes are intended to be a progression after discharge from outpatient OHIP funded physiotherapy sessions, which would be completed immediately after surgery.

benefits:

  • Social connection with other patients who have been through the same surgery

  • Motivation and accountability to adhere to post-operative exercise planning

  • Access to gym and rehab equipment

CLASS TIMES:

  • 2x/week: Monday and Friday mornings at 9:45am

Frequently Asked Questions about group active physiotherapy

  • We suggest you complete your outpatient physiotherapy services following your surgery initially, and then join our classes. These classes are intended to succeed discharge from outpatient rehab after a THA/TKA.

  • You will be required to be assessed by one of our physiotherapists in order to use your private healthcare insurance to cover these group physiotherapy sessions. You will then be able to attend 2x/week for 6 weeks. You can complete a re-assessment at this point if you and your physiotherapist think continuing the classes would be beneficial.

  • Please bring indoor shoes, a water bottle, and active wear. If you require the use of a gait aid (cane, etc.) please bring it with you.

  • A light meal 1-2 hours before class or a small snack 30-60 minutes prior can provide energy. Avoid heavy meals right before class.

  • Start conservatively and select weights that allow you to complete all repetitions with proper technique but feel challenging for the last few reps. Your physiotherapist can provide guidance on safe use.

  • Absolutely. If you have not regained full function or strength (this may differ for different patients, depending on your goals), then you are the right fit for this class!

  • The physiotherapy exercises selected for each class will be catered towards the individual participant in the class. Progressive options for each exercise will be taught, and participants will have the option to choose easier or harder versions.

  • Some muscle soreness (especially 24-48 hours after class) is normal for beginners or after excercises that challenge your baseline, but excessive soreness isn't necessary for improvement and may indicate you've pushed too hard.
